Se determinó la variación espacio-temporal de la biomasa de los grupos morfo-funcionales de macroalgas y su relación con las variables ambientales: temperatura, salinidad, oxígeno disuelto y precipitaciones en dos localidades (laguna y playa) de pastizales al Norte de Ciego de Ávila desde marzo de 2010 a febrero de 2011. Las colectas se realizaron utilizando marco cuadrado de 25 cm de lado y se tomaron 15 unidades de muestreo en cada sitio. En las últimas décadas ha ocurrido un deterioro acelerado de los arrecifes de coral debido al efecto sinérgico de impactos naturales y antrópicos. En consecuencia, el objetivo de la tesis es evaluar los efectos acumulativos producidos por agentes estresantes múltiples y que impactan de forma simultánea los corales hermatípicos. Para ello se estimaron indicadores ecológicos en los niveles de comunidad y población. La expansión de la industria camaronícola depende de un adecuado conocimiento del proceso de reproducción que permita desarrollar programas de domesticación. El potencial reproductivo de los camarones domesticados al ser transferidos a condiciones de maduración depende, en buena parte, de la condición previa en la que se encuentran. Los indicadores más importantes relacionados con esta condición y que se analizan en el presente trabajo en relación a la edad y el tamaño de los camarones son: el grado de desarrollo ovárico y testicular, la calidad espermática y los niveles de reservas energéticas en Litopenaeus vannamei. Una de las alternativas propuestas para reducir el impacto de esta especie invasora en nuestro territorio fue su evaluación con fines de extracción y comercialización. La investigación se realizó en los meses de octubre de 2011 y marzo de 2012. A partir del análisis de imágenes satelitales se seleccionaron 41 sitios en el sector central del golfo de Ana María, región surcentral de Cuba. En dichos sitios se llevó a cabo el inventario de corales, gorgonias y esponjas. Para los corales, se analizó, además, el estado de salud. El inventario se realizó en los ecosistemas de manglar, pastizales y arrecifes de coral (biotopos de cabezos y fondos areno-rocosos). El estudio de la etapa larval de Atractosteus tristoechus fue realizado a través del análisis morfo-fisiológico bajo condiciones de cultivo a 28o C, desde la eclosión hasta los 18 días después de eclosionadas (DDE) las larvas. Se identificaron y describieron tres etapas de desarrollo: adherida 0-3 DDE, de transición 4-10 DDE y libre nadadora 11-18 DDE. Las tasas de crecimiento fueron de 1,30 mm/d y 10,2 %/d, encontrándose una desaceleración en la segunda etapa que coincide con las mayores alometrías, lo que indica fuertes cambios morfogénicos. In 2017, the dominant greenhouse gases released into Earth’s atmosphere—carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide— reached new record highs. The annual global average carbon dioxide concentration at Earth’s surface for 2017 was 405.0 ± 0.1 ppm, 2.2 ppm greater than for 2016 and the highest in the modern atmospheric measurement record and in ice core records dating back as far as 800 000 years. The recent extinction of the Caribbean monk seal Monachus tropicalis has been considered an example of a human-caused extinction in the marine environment, and this species was considered a driver of the changes that have occurred in the structure of Caribbean coral reef ecosystems since colonial times. I searched archaeological records, historical data, and geographic names (used as a proxy of the presence of seals) and evaluated the use and quality of these data to conclude that since prehistoric times the Caribbean monk seal was always rare and vulnerable to human predation.
